First of all, you have a right to be skeptical and changing one's lifestyle does require some effort.
But you would not mind getting a bit healthier and leaning out a bit either?
Good! We are actually on the same page. Many of my clients are not Paleo either but have intigrated some aspects of the primal lifestyle with good results.
Why not dip that toe into the water and see what happens? The challenges listed here are very feasable and will have a positive effect on your waistline. I won't make you eat loads of meat or run barefoot. Being Paleo means eating real food (most of the time) and living a healthy lifestyle. So all you'll be doing is easing into it with some tweaks. Pick and choose, stick to it and you'll reap a rewarding toe dip.
One Week Challenge: Alcohol detox
Let's start with the booze! Try to stay off alcohol for an entire week. A glass of beer 3ml/ 10oz has 129 kcal and a a Mojito is even double those calories. Additionally beer contains female hormones which are responsible for the infamous beer gut and man boobs.
Five Day Challenge: Processed snacks detox
For five days avoid any kind sugary and processed snack. Studies have shown that the biggest threat to gain too much weight come from too many in-between meals.
Although snacks look small and innocent with the help of hidden fats, sugars and/ or salts they have been designed to be very palatable -- meaning we can a lot eat of that stuff even when full. Try to stick to 3 meals only and adjust your portion sizes according how active you are on that day.
I know it's hot and you want something refreshing but consider that a glass of apple or orange juice contains 150 kcal (even more calories than beer). Unlike glucose sugar, fruit sugars (fructose) is always partly converted into fat. Stick to coffee & tea without sugar and lots of water for 3 days. Scientists have found a connection between drinking enough water and burning fat. And having to walk to the loo more often burns a few more calories as well.
Weekend Challenge: Gluten detox
For the weekend cross out gluten containing foods like pastry, pasta, grains etc from your menu. Gluten is basically a protein which causes gut inflammation in the majority of the population. Possible direct consequences are cross-allergies or other immune reactions. Since gluten can weaken the ability of the gut to absorb nutrients it also increases the chance of us overeating. People staying off gluten have reported feeling less bloated and less puffy and also observed weight loss.
Paleo people do not like chronic mediocre cardio. It's waste of time. What's chronic mediocre cardio? You step on a treadmill or stair-master, put on a DVD and the only noticeable spikes in your heart rate was due to the action scenes. You can be more effective and efficient with a shorter and focused strength workout. Get your heart pumping and build some muscles. Yes, the ladies, too. More muscles mean more calorie-burning cells.
Sunday to Thursday Evening Challenge: Go to bed relaxed and early
Give yourself enough shut-eye on school-nights.Why? Sleep research programs at the New York University School of Medicine have shown that sleep has an impact on our weight. Getting enough sleep makes us physically and mentally stronger and we can resist stress better. Lack of sleep on the other hand weakens the immune system and makes us more susceptible to stress. The body tries to compensate by increasing our appetite: Sleeping less means we tend to eat more.
